Shopping for the best value in a used car? Your Newark used car dealer has just what you are looking for and is also offering this handy-dandy value guide from Edmunds.com to help you narrow down your favorites.

Each year Edmunds.com gives out the Used Car Best Bet Awards and they are based on qualities such as safety, reliability and availability. To be included, models must have been sold as new from 2003-2008. Buyers of NJ used cars appreciate the guidance from Edmunds.com.

In the category of Compact Sedan, the Hyundai Elantra was given kudos for a smooth ride and the roominess of the cargo bay in its GT hatchback. With standard features like a moonroof and leather seating this model was a favorite, especially when you factor in its fuel economy.

The Toyota Camry gets the nod in the Midsized Sedan class. A quiet ride and proven reliability are some of its best features, but the fact that it has remained a popular family car was a factor as well. Already showing impressive fuel economy, the hybrid version took that to a new level.

When it comes to the Large Sedan class the Hyundai Azera got top ratings for its luxury features and an affordable price. Dealers of NJ used cars offer a wide variety of models and options on their lot.

No surprise here – the BMW 3 Series wrapped up the Coupe category because it managed just the right combination of style, sportiness and practical features. Performance is smooth and powerful even with the smaller engine. The added retractable hardtop on the 2007 convertible was a plus as well.

But, when it came to the Convertible class, the Mazda Miata, not BMW, was the top pick. Edmunds used lots of adjectives in describing the Miata, including "exuberant" and "ultraresponsive". The manual transmission with precision is the draw for true sports car enthusiasts and it’s also fuel efficient and affordable.

Pontiac Vibe is the choice for Wagons and its use of space and its styling, as well as a smooth powertrain borrowed from Toyota garnered votes for the Vibe. Price was the bottom line, though. It’s more affordable than most other brands.

In the Compact SUV/Crossover class the Honda CR-V continued to impress. Boasting interior space to compete with large SUVs, it is fuel efficient and performs well in crash tests. Newark used car customers can check out many of these models in the showroom now.

Midsized SUV/Crossover top pick went to the Mitsubishi Endeavor which is touted as "reliable and comfortable". Edmunds evaluators also like the way it rode and handled and cited high crash test scores as playing a role in choosing it.

When it comes to the Large SUV/Crossover category, the Chevy Tahoe rules based on its "strong performance and comfortable ride". Seating nine, it still handles well and can tow a good-sized load.

Honda Odyssey comes out tops in the Minivan/Van class with a powerful V6 engine, roomy interior and a third seat that can completely disappear. It’s worth the extra money, Edmunds assures.

The Toyota Tacoma earns the top spot on the Compact Truck class because of its reliable performance record and versatility as a street or off-road vehicle and a crew cab for the family.

If you’re shopping for a Large Truck, Edmunds recommends the Ford F-150 because it’s been a top-seller for almost 30 years and has many trim choices and options. It also was deemed to have the best braking system in its class.

The Luxury market might be a tougher area to discern the best buy, as the range of options gets to be overwhelming. Edmunds has a suggestion – the Infiniti G35, which provides a roomy interior and has a reasonable price.

The Hybrid top spot goes to - you guessed it - the Toyota Prius. We’ve heard enough about this hybrid in the past year to know why it was picked. Even with the recalls, sales rose and owners remained loyal. Enough said.
